An estimated 40 million people are in modern slavery all over the world. This criminal industry generates a conservative estimate of over $150 billion in illegal profits every year, making it the second largest international crime after drug trafficking. Human trafficking occurs in every country. During this course, you will learn important terminology in this field, the different types of human trafficking that exist and an understanding of the scope of the problem, both domestically and globally. You will also learn about the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual trauma experienced by victims of human trafficking and the methods used to recruit and control them. The roles that entities such as government, the media, faith-based organizations, organized crime, and culture play in this complex human rights and social (in)justice issue will also be explored.
KRISHNA R. PATEL currently serves as General Counsel and Justice Initiative Director at Grace Farms Foundation, a private operating foundation located in New Canaan, CT. In her role as the Justice Initiative Director, she is an active strategist, combating human trafficking on the global, national and state levels. Moreover, in a distinguished legal career spanning over fifteen years, she served as a federal prosecutor from 1999 until 2015, prior to joining Grace Farms.
