No society since ancient Rome has produced such a profound and long-lasting impact on human civilization than 15th century Florence. Led by the staggering wealth of the Medici family, Florence was the seat of an artistic, technological, and scientific blossoming known to us now as the Renaissance. It was a time filled with violent murder and courtly love, boundless generosity and spiteful revenge, purity and depravity…all of which found expression in the visual culture of the period.

In a five week course we will examine how one city produced such a remarkable and prolific inventory of artists; from Masaccio to Michelangelo and from Donatello to da Vinci. The final class will be a one-hour tour of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s incredible Florentine collection.
