The Russian National Ballet, Directed by Elena Radchenko, is a cut above many of its rivals. The 'Swan Lake' danced at Montgomery College's Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center on Tuesday night was the real thing.

This esteemed Russian company presents one of the most magical and well-known works from the classical ballet repertoire. With majestic choreography by Petipa accompanying Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, and exquisite costuming and set design, it is easy to see why Swan Lake continues to earn the adoration of enthusiasts while attracting newcomers.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake has been captivating audiences since its premiere at the Boloshi Theatre in 1877. The scenario, initially in two acts, was fashioned from folk tales and tells the magical tale of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse, and the prince who yearns to set her free.

The Russian National Ballet has been bringing timeless ballet classics to the stages of North America since 1999. Founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, the company used their new-found creative freedom, influenced by the political movement, to invigorate the tradition of Russian Ballet with new developments in dance from around the world. In 1994, legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Ms. Radchenko, founder of the Russian National Ballet, is focused on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia. The company delivers a repertory of the world’s most beloved classical ballets, which continue to enlighten, inspire, and entertain audience across the globe.
