Three-time Grammy winner and renowned opera star Ryan Speedo Green tells–and sings–his own story.
From juvenile detention to becoming one of the premier performers at The Metropolitan Opera.
At the age of twelve, Green was sent to Virginia’s juvenile facility of last resort. There, he was locked in solitary confinement cells, because the staff could not control him. His home was volatile, his father gone, his mother violent. Yet today he is one of the greatest opera singers in the world.
In 2011, at the age of 24, Green came out of nowhere to win a nationwide competition hosted by New York’s Metropolitan Opera, beating out 1,200 other singers. He now is performing lead roles at the Met and Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.
In Sing for Your Life, Green takes us on his unforgettable journey, through intimate memories and spectacular singing in genres ranging from arias to gospel and pop. This is a story of race, art, and family that poses profound questions about the forces that shape us and the devoted teachers and mentors who guide us in determining our destinies.
