The Met’s season concludes with Gabriela Lena Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego. This magical-realist opera, featuring a libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz, tells the story of Frida Kahlo returning from the underworld to reunite briefly with Diego Rivera. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard and baritone Carlos Álvarez star as the iconic artists, portraying both the passion and pain of their legendary love. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts this Met-premiere production.
Directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker, the staging draws vivid inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings and has been praised for its bold color and emotional depth. This landmark event brings a powerful new voice to the operatic stage, celebrating art, love, and legacy in unforgettable style.
